Turf burns and other abrasions that scrape the top layer of skin off can be very painful, especially if they're over a flexible joint such as the knee or elbow. Regular bandages help blot drainage and keep dirt out, but they also keep the wound dry, so scabs form which make it even more painful every time you move the affected joint.
Unlike regular bandages, these hydrogel dressings have an immediate cooling and soothing effect on the skin that reduces pain, and they are more flexible as well which makes them particularly useful when treating joint injuries.
The hydrogel pads don't have any adhesive to stick to a wound, so once you lay them on the wound with the gel side down you need to secure them in place with something such as athletic wrap, gauze wrap, or another breathable dressing such as Tegaderm. I prefer to use a Tegaderm dressing over the hydrogel pad because you can leave it in place for several days and even shower with it on, so you don't need to disturb the wound as often.
These hydrogel pads help turf burns, abrasions, lacerations, minor burns skin ulcers and other superficial wounds heal faster than regular bandages by keeping the wound area moist. A moist dressing helps skin cells regenerate faster, helps the body absorb dead or damaged tissue, reduces the formation of scabs and scars, and reduces pain signals to nerve endings.
Injuries heals faster, don't hurt as much, and even look better when using a hydrogel pad rather than a dry bandage dressing. These hydrogel pads have silver woven into the fabric which helps prevent infection as your wound heals, so in addition to turf burns and abrasions, they would be very helpful in treating non-full thickness burns, early-stage pressure sores, healing surgical sites, or minor lacerations.
You don't have to be an athlete to get scrapes, minor cuts or burns, so I highly recommend having some of these hydrogel pads in your arsenal of first aid supplies - especially if you have kids!
