    The Door Bull

I rarely write reviews but I thought it might help others if I shared what I learned having recently installed and used this product. I originally heard about the Door Bull on a DIY Network (now known as Magnolia Network) TV show. It sounded like a very intriguing product and it would provide me with more security protection and peace-of-mind. I have been waiting to buy it hoping it would drop in price like it did late last year. It has not changed price in some time so I finally made the decision to buy it at the current price and not the sale price. As other people have already mentioned, the mounting hardware, specifically the mounting screws and drill bit provided inside the box, are low quality. My best guess is that the screws are a low quality zinc. I decided to use my own 1/8" drill bit. Even knowing that the mounting hardware was low quality and being extremely careful (e.g. pre-drilling holes, setting my power drill on the appropriate torque setting, taking my time, etc.) I also almost stripped out some of the screw heads. I used a PH2 phillips screw bit (shown in photo) and it seemed to fit the head of the provided 3" screws the best.In my photo, it shows that I had to mortise the main Door Bull mounting bracket into the door jam. Using a sharp wood chisel, it was actually not very difficult. I simply held the main Door Bull mounting bracket up to the door jam, used a pencil to trace around it, and then chiseled it down to the right depth (approximately 1/8") so that the mounting bracket would be completely flush with the rest of the door jam. If I did not mortise it out, I would not have worked on my door because there was a very minimal gap between the door and the door jam which is really great for keeping the weather out but made it so that I had to mortise the Door Bull in or it definitely would not have worked in my situation. The Door Bull comes with a total of six 3" low quality zinc screws. Three of them are for the main Door Bull mounting bracket and three of them are supposed to be used to swap out shorter screws in three of hinges on your door (opposite side of door than where Door Bull is located) with longer screws which is a great idea. When I started swapping out the screws that were in the door hinges and screwed into the door jam, I was shocked to see just how short most of them were. In my photo, the far left 3" screw is what comes inside the Door Bull box. The middle screw is what was holding my door to the door jam and those screws were only 3/4" long. A 3/4" screw in a hinge is really more for just looks and it seemed like an angry toddler probably could have kicked my door in on the hinge side. After seeing just how short the hinge screws were, I went down to my local hardware store and purchased several 3" wood screws (far right screw in my photo). I replaced all the 3/4" hinge screws with the longer 3" wood screws. Again, the Door Bull provides you with a total of three screws to replace one screw in each hinge with a longer one but I wanted even more protection and my door had a total of 4 hinges. If I was going to all the time and effort to buy and install this product to improve security, I wanted to completely do it right and not leave several 3/4" hinge screws as the weakest part of my entire door. The quality of the actual main mounting bracket and the part that slides over it when in use (w/ the Door Bull logo on it) is good/decent quality. They are both made out of aluminum and I have no issues at all with the quality of those parts. I also appreciate that the Door Bull got me to check the door hinge screws since they provided three of them otherwise I probably would have had no idea just how short the door hinge screws were in my door. Using the Door Bull feels very solid and I have to say that I do believe that it has improved the security of my door. I previously had a cheap white flip latch on the door which is better than nothing but it really is not designed to provide much security protection from someone who is deliberately trying to force their way into your house. The Door Bull seems like it will do a much better job and my hope is that it never needs to get used in real life but I do have trust that it should do what it's intended to do.For something that costs this much money and is designed to help improve the security of your home, the Door Bull really should come with higher quality mounting screws and a higher quality drill bit. I would really like to see them include something like stainless steel screws rather than cheap zinc screws. It would also have been great if they would have provided extra additional hinge screws (more than just 3) but as I mentioned, at least they got me to check those which I do appreciate. The Door Bull wouldn't work as well with extremely short 3/4" hinge screws holding the door to the door jam. An entire vertical side of the door (opposite side where the Door Bull is installed) would definitely have been the weakest point of the entire door. After replacing the short 3/4" hinge screws with 3" screws, I now have much more confidence that the security of my entire door set up has improved significantly.I gave the Door Bull 3 out of 5 stars specifically because of the cheap mounting screws and cheap drill bit. Had they provided high quality mounting screws and a drill bit (which is really what they should do for the price that they are charging), I would have given it 5 out of 5 stars. The other option would be for the Door Bull to significantly reduce the price of their product to correspond with the cheap mounting hardware provided. Since this product is designed to improve security, the right thing to do would be for them to make sure that all of the hardware provided is high quality.Update 11/5/19: The creators of The Door Bull have said that they are changing the screws to Stainless Steel screws based on user feedback. Once I find out when the change in production happened (or will be happening), I plan on updating my star rating on this product accordingly. Thank you Door Bull for reading our feedback and taking real action to make this product even better! It’s very much appreciated.Update December 2022: Updating my rating to 5 stars for two primary reasons:1. They are now including high quality hardened metal screws - thank you Door Bull creators!2. When I originally purchased the Door Bull, when it initially became available, it was $69.99. That cost seemed very high considering the amount and types of materials being used. I see the price right now is $27.99 (possibly a temporary sale price) which is less than half of what I originally paid and that lower price seems much more reasonable. After using the Door Bull daily on my front door for 3+ years, it’s still holding up great and it looks and functions as good as the first day it was installed. After writing my original review, I did purchase/install 1 additional Door Bull for another exterior-facing door on my house. I still strongly recommend this product.

Arrived on time. Was completely sealed new. All parts were included and it installed literally in less than about 15 minutes.Product seems very solid and I believe it would significantly make an enormous noise for someone to actually try to break through. Enough to wake someone which is good enough for me.The included screws do seem quality enough to do the job.I would recommend. Also recommended to put 3" screws on the hinge side as well.

The Door Bull was fairly easy to install. The trickiest part is lining up the frame plate to protrude just far enough to slip the lock over. After you drill the first hole and position it make sure to close the door and test if the lock slips snuggly on the frame plate before you drill all 3 holes. You don't want it too loose and my first attempt I had it too far in so i could not even slip the lock on at all.The screws were high quality stainless steel. Had to apply a fair amount of force putting a couple screws in but the heads did not strip which is a sign of a quality screw. Three extra 3" screws are provided so you can fortify each of the three door hinges mounted in the frame with one longer screw. I was amazed to find the standard hinge screws are only about 1" long!My molding protrudes a bit so my lock is at a slight slant to the door but it is snug and slips in snugly.I don't plan on trying to kick my door and test this so I cannot verify how well it works but the concept is sound and if anything it may discourage an intruder or slow them down enough so you can arm yourself.

    The Door Bull

The next best thing to bracing a 2×4 across the door.

I wanted to secure my outside basement door, which is a very heavy and solid wood door; the kind they just don't make anymore. The Door Bull was easy to install in literally 5 to ten minutes. It fits just snug enough and really secures the door. It provides that added security in addition to the existing knob lock and dead-bolt. Really a solid and ingenious device. With the three 3-inch screws going deep into the door jamb, the Door Bull provides a very wide latching area that is almost three times the surface area of the dead bolt alone. Anyone trying to kick in the door will have to shatter the door and the jamb to splinters before the door can be compromised. Great product. I will be ordering a second one for the garage door.

    The Door Bull

Least invasive but still effective means to slow entry into your home

PROS:- Installation relatively simple, under the right conditions.- Extremely non-invasive option. Sleek / smart design.- Very good option for doors with limited space.- Should provide occupants with more time to protect themselves.- May deter the vast majority of intruders due to increased time and effort needed to gain entry.- The hanger is a good idea and helps to keep the device available at all times.- Installation can lead to awareness of other potential weak spots (that would otherwise go unnoticed)CONS:- The price point is slightly high. Worth the investment, but may deter some from purchasing.- Screws provided strip far too easily. Do not use them.- Dependent on integrity of door installation.- Calculating installation depth of base can be tricky.- Can require a higher than average aptitude for construction.- Only works for in-swinging doors. This is not a big deal, but is important to know.- The makers of this device need to have more videos available showing the capabilities of their product. Many other devices have videos from various sources testing them. This one does not. The lack of sponsored and independent test videos almost prevented me from purchasing the device.RECOMMENDATIONS:- If you have an older home, or are not handy (in terms of construction) get an experienced person (friend, family member, trusted handyman) to install it for you.- Use star-head screws purchased from hardware store (or Amazon!). This is an absolute MUST!- You will need a relatively powerful drill.- Watch YouTube videos and install 3" - 4" screws into hinge-side of door as well. Use caution, this can alter the door's ability to close properly.MY EXPERIENCE:Thankfully, I have some experience in home improvement and construction. I installed The Door Bull on two of my entry doors. The front door went relatively smoothly. I did notice, that if you have the means and desire that a person could install more than one of these to a door, potentially increasing the effectiveness. When I went to install it to my metal garage side entry door (a door I thought was the most secure in my home), I found that it was improperly installed and very vulnerable to blunt force. I had to remove the trim and place additional wood in the gap between the door frame and the wall stud. I then had to use 4" screws to ensure a solid connection from the frame to the stud. This is not a knock on the Door Bull. In fact, I was able to correct the problem because of the Door Bull. Now, that door is very secure. This device will not "prevent" entry into your home. It may effectively slow entry and/or deter entry. I have recommended it to my family members and friends.

Outstanding quality. Easy install. Easy to use.

This was designed with real security in mind. It comes with 3 inch screws that go through the door frame into the stud to really secure your door. It's easy to install, comes with everything you need (screws, drill bit, instructions), and is easy and convenient to use every day.I have been using this every day and it's just part of the routine of locking up.The only thing I can say that could be improved is that some of the edges/corners are sharp. They could be filed down, and they ought to have come smoothed. But it's a minor issue.

This took all of five minutes to install and it provides much better protection than a deadbolt. It comes with the screws and a drill bit and ok instructions. My wife does not like the look of what they call the lock (slides into place over mounting plate to secure the door) so we did not install the storage hanger. The price is higher than I would pay if I didn't have a need for just this type of door brace.

A bit of extra security - Just use a better bit

I read the other reviews and complaints about the screws that are included in the kit, and decided to get my own star headed 3" screws. I like mine better than what comes in the kit. I ended up replacing all of the screws in my door hinges (as shown in the photo, a 2 yr old could kick in my door), and used them for this Door Bull too. It fits well against the door, and there is no slack, it's snug, and easy to slide in and out of the groove. For a little more security, it's worth getting one of these, especially if you don't use your front door very often. However, if there's a power outage, and you don't have a battery backup on your garage door opener, then you are not going to get in your own house through the front door if this is in place. Common sense, sure....but there's always somebody that will forget.*Update* I purchased another one of these for a 'safe room' inside the house. During the installation, the cheap drill bit they send with this kit broke inside one of the holes, so I had to cover it with silicone. Advice: Use a better drill bit for installation, and toss the one that comes with it, out, along with the screws. You'd think that providing a nice solid device like this, they would send quality screws and a bit that's not made of pudding. Still, a great device for security as long as you use your own hardware.

    Need higher grade screws (stronger)

I bought two door bulls. It was everything I expected. The only problem is the screws that came with the kit was too soft. I stripped 2 of them and broke one. Install took longer due to stripped screw heads and one screw breaking passed half way into the wood. Had to buy higher grade screws as a replacement to this. For the price I paid I expect the screws to be stronger. Would have given 5 stars if the screws are better.

Peace of Mind * Outstanding Door Security

I am so please with my purchase of the Door Bull ( tried a less expensive unit first, had a hinge to clamp down on the door, no matter how I adjusted it, the door always pushed it open.) I decided to invest in the Door Bull, and I’m more than satisfied. It was easy to install to the door frame. Then, when I added the piece that blocks the door, I was jumping for joy! The Door Bull is stronger than my door lock and dead bolt. I live in a condo, with a main door and common hallway for residents. I never felt safe, until I had the Door Bull installed. This has been the single best investment I’ve made in my new condo of only a few months. Thank you to the creators.
