Phoebe is in London for her 4th Season and dreading it. She’s pretty, has a high standing in society, and reserved. She’s also in love with her childhood friend, Fred, who thinks of her as a sister. Fred has been serving in the British army and recovering from a broken heart. The woman he loves is outgoing, adventurous and vivacious- all the things Phoebe is not. They both end up in Brussels at the time Napoleon escapes prison. Phoebe is hoping to get over her love of Fred and make a match in Brussels. Hard to do with Fred hanging around who is now beginning to see Phoebe as more than a child. There isn’t much more to their relationship other than their childhood and being attracted to each other. Society is full of entertainment and shopping as the British military and their allies prepare for Napoleon. The writing was perfect, the descriptions of the times and culture were well done. The romance was slow and not very interesting.
